CCENT (Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician) certification
640-822 ICND1 Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices

The CCENT certification is an entry level certification that validates the ability to install, operate and troubleshoot a small branch network, including basic network security. It validates the skills required for entry-level network support positions.

Cisco dominates the internetworking hardware market with a more than 80% share of the routers used on the Internet. The Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) certification is  the starting point for many new CCNAs, by far Cisco's most popular certification.

Cisco has addressed the ever-growing scope of the CCNA certification by introducing the CCENT certification - a stepping-stone certification to bridge the gap between novice level and the knowledge required to become a fully-fledged CCNA. Cisco's CCENT (Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician) certification is therefore aimed at candidates with little previous networking experience.

The CCENT is the first step towards achieving the CCNA and requires passing one exam, 640-822 Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 (ICND1). CCNA, is geared to cover medium size enterprise branch networks with more complex connections. The exam includes topics on networking fundamentals; connecting to a WAN; basic security and wireless concepts; routing and switching fundamentals; the TCP/IP and OSI models; IP addressing; WAN technologies; operating and configuring IOS devices; configuring RIPv2, static and default routing; implementing NAT and DHCP; and configuring simple networks.
To recertify, candidates must pass either the ICND1 or ICND2 exam, or pass any 642 professional level or Cisco Specialist exam (excluding Sales Specialist exams), or pass a current CCIE written exam.

The CCENT exam is actually one half of the two exams required for the CCNA certification (if a candidate elects to take the two-exam path) which makes taking the CCNA two-exam path much more attractive.

640-822 ICND1 Exam duration is 90 Minutes (50-60 questions) In order to gain the CCENT certification, candidates need to only pass one exam:

So The Key Exam Topics and Guidelines Are....
Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 exam include but not limited to:

  • Describe the operation of data networks.

  • Implement a small switched network

  • Implement an IP addressing scheme and IP services to meet network requirements for a small branch office

  • Implement a small routed network

  • Explain and select the appropriate administrative tasks required for a WLAN

  • Identify security threats to a network and describe general methods to mitigate those threats

  • Implement and verify WAN links

Realistic Expectations

Due to the pervasive effect of networking technologies and infrastructure, all over the world in different spheres of life, there is steady and increasing demand for skilled network professionals. Networking spans a wide expertise range and network certifications, such as CCNA, CCENT, Network+,  MCP/MCSE , aim to equip individuals with the skills needed to build successful careers in networking. For many candidates the focus is usually on new job and business opportunities, recognition and better compensation.

While it is true that certifications give individuals the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents there must be realistic expectations. Achieving certification is key to the continuing educational development of the individual and is a sign of initiative – it differentiates you from the competition and is recognized by clients and employers. However, though certifications like other educational programs may confer advantage they do not guarantee anything.

GETTING OPPORTUNITIES ALSO DEPENDS ON YOUR CONTRIBUTION, ATTITUDE, EXPERIENCE AND MARKETING SKILLS. Candidates need to bear this in mind at all times. Certifications are NOT guarantees or “quick-fix”, shortcut career solutions. As you take advantage of certification, make sure you have realistic expectations and know how the certification fits into your career plan.

Cisco Career Certification Exams Include The Following Test Formats:

  • Multiple-choice single answer

  • Multiple-choice multiple answer

  • Drag-and-drop

  • Fill-in-the-blank

  • Testlet

  • Simlet

  • Simulations

Before taking the exam, candidates should become familiar with how all exam types function-especially the testlet, simlet, and the simulation tool. Such practice will allow candidates to focus their exam-taking efforts on the exam questions rather than on how to correctly use the tools.

The CCENT certification is valid for three years after which time a candidate will need to recertify in order to remain current (Cisco will send candidates a reminder shortly before the expiry date of their certification). Cisco offers candidates a number of ways to recertify:

  1. Pass either one of the ICND1 or ICND2 exams

  2. Pass the current CCNA exam

  3. Pass any one CCNA Concentration exam

  4. Pass any 642-XXX Professional level or Cisco Specialist exam (excluding Sales Specialist)

  5. Pass the current CCIE or CCDE written exam

Any one of these paths will allow a candidate to recertify their CCENT credential.

So The Benefits Of CCENT Certification:

  • CCENT certification validates your skills in installing and managing small enterprise networks.

  • CCENT certified professionals can get appropriate jobs easily as they get the recognition of their skills by Cisco, the leader in networking technologies.

  • This certification is the first step towards the more advanced CCNA certification.

  • CCENT certified professionals get more salary and preference in promotions.
