CCNA 640-801 VS  640-802

This CCNA exam (640-801) for earning Cisco Certified Network Associate certification has been retired as of November 6, 2007. This information is here for your general information for comparison.

Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco’s most popular certification indicates a foundation in networking and the Cisco environment.

One of the most highly sought entry-level certification exam was updated. There are now two paths for CCNA certification: CCNA 640-802 or Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1  ICND1 640-822: CCNA Part 1/CCENT  AND  Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 2  ICND2 640-816: CCNA Part 2

The Cisco, “The 640-802 Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) is the composite exam associated with the Cisco Certified Network Associate certification. This exam tests a candidate's knowledge and skills required to install, operate, and troubleshoot a small to medium size enterprise branch network.“

This piece takes a look at the one exam path – the old CCNA exam (640-801) and the current one exam CCNA path (640-802), as well as related developments with Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)..

What is the new content? What has changed? How does the new compare with the old CCNA and CCNP? What remains the same?

I’ve tabulated the similarities and differences in this table below:

It is hoped that this table will give you an idea of the basic differences and similarities in the two versions of the single-exam CCNA, and how both versions of CCNA compares with the CCNP.  Although this is an analysis of the CCNA one exam path, proper interpretation and understanding should help in your certification preparations.

The following information provides general guidelines for the content likely to be included on the CCNA 640-802 exam. However, other related topics may also appear on any specific delivery of the exam.

  • Describe how a network works
  • Configure, verify and troubleshoot a switch with VLANs and interswitch communications
  • Implement an IP addressing scheme and IP Services to meet network requirements in a medium-size Enterprise branch office network.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot basic router operation and routing on Cisco devices
  • Explain and select the appropriate administrative tasks required for a WLAN
  • Identify security threats to a network and describe general methods to mitigate those threats
  • Implement, verify, and troubleshoot NAT and ACLs in a medium-size Enterprise branch office network.
  • Implement and verify WAN links

Is CCNA: ICND1 and ICND 2 Exam Right For You?

The 640-802 test is appropriate for you if you have a basic understanding of computers and networking technology. There are no specific prerequisites for this test, although it is recommended that you should have at least some experience in implementing and administering networks.

This test is suitable for you if you want to work as a Network administrator, System Analyst or Network Support Professional.
